Neighborhood University is Building Informed, Empowered Neighbors
Colorado Springs Utilities night at Neighborhood University
This spring, Neighborhood University students have been diving deep into what makes Colorado Springs tick. From exploring the city’s rich and complex history at the Pioneers Museum to learning how local government functions, students are gaining the tools to better understand their neighborhoods and advocate for meaningful change. Week by week, they’re connecting the past to the present, seeing how decisions made over time have shaped the communities we live in today.
The curriculum has taken students behind the scenes of city planning, zoning, and land use—equipping them with the knowledge to participate in conversations about growth, development, and sustainability. They've learned about Colorado Springs Utilities and how essential services like water and energy are managed and delivered, as well as how those systems impact everyday life for residents.
Most recently, the class has tackled big questions around development and housing—two pressing issues facing our city. Students have explored the complexities of affordability, accessibility, and community impact while hearing directly from leaders and experts who are working on the frontlines. It’s all part of preparing neighbors not just to understand how the city works, but to shape its future!
